Cliff Asness was born on October 17, 1966, in Greenwich, Connecticut, United States. He is a well-known co-founder of AQR Capital Management. In addition, he is a hedge fund manager. Basically, Ansess is a Jew from Queens, New York.

The name of his father is Carol Asness who is a medical educator, while that of his mother is Barry Asness who is Manhattan’s assistant district attorney. When he was 4 years old, his family moved to Roslyn Heights.

Education

Asness did his undergraduate program at the University of Pennsylvania. He did this with a double major like computer science and finance. This was done from Jerome Fisher Program in Management and Technology.

IN 1988, he was able to complete the five-year program in four years. His interest in finance and portfolio management was at the start of his profession. He used to work as a research assistant in the Finance Department at Wharton.

From there, he learned the use of “coding computer programs” in order to analyze markets and “test economic and financial theories”.

Career

In 1990, Cliff started his career at the age of 24 years. At that time, he was a Ph.D. student. In the early 1990s, he became manager of Goldman Sachs Asset Management’s (GSAM) “new quantitative research desk”.

Two friends were invited to join him at GSAM at the University of Chicago. Along with them, he started working to develop models to evaluate risk in currencies, bonds, and entire economies.

In 1985, he inspired some partners at Goldman to provide him with an initial US$10 million investment in order to employ the computer-driven models. These were employed to invest in the market.

Untill 1997, he also worked as a GSAM manager and later, left to start their own quant hedge fund. In 1998, he along with David Kabiller, John Liew, and Rober Krail co-founded AQR Capital Management which was a quantitative hedge fund firm.

They made $37 million and $50 million in 2002 and 2003 respectively. In 2004, the headquarters of AQR were moved from New York to Greenwich, Connecticut. In 2008, there were complaints about short-selling restrictions in The New York Times.

Till the end of 2010, AQR was able to have 433 billion assets under management. Moreover, an October 2010 Bloomberg article, described AQR as a “quantitative investment firm”. In the “2007 quant meltdown”, AQR suffered losses. Also, it suffered losses in the 2008 financial crisis.

IN 2016, Connecticut’s State Bond Commission gave $35 million as financial aid to AQR. The purpose was to persuade companies to remain in Connecticut. In 2019, it became an ‘investment firm’.
