His real name is Gilbert Vandine Houston, who was born on August 18, 1918, in Wilmington, Delaware, the US. He is the second of four children. The name of his father was Adrian Moncure Houston, who was a steel-metal worker. He died in 1961.

At a young age, his family moved to California. During his school days, he began to play the guitar. He, basically, picked up an assortment of folk songs from his family. Although, he was affected by nystagmus, but he was still the most brilliant student.

Before his death, Cisco talked with his old friend Lee Hays, who recorded their session for a project known as “The Cisco Tapes”. Throughout his career, Houston contributed to some original tunes.

Some of the famous contributions include “Great July Jones”, “Crazy Heart”, “Ramblin’ Gambin Man”, and “Bad Man’s Blunder” along with “The Killer”. Most of the compositions were included in the songbook 900 Miles, the Ballads, Blues, and Folksongs of Cisco Houston. It was issued by Oak Publications in 1965.

Houston along with hays revised an earlier song titled “Bad Man’s Blunder”. The Kingston Trio recorded it for their album titled String Along. Under the sponsorship of the State Department with Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, and Marilyn Childs, Houston visited India in 1959.

In 1960, he was able to host the television special titled Folk Sound USA on CBS. Later, he appeared at the Newport Folk Festival. In 1948, Cisco appeared in the Broadway theatre play titled The Cradle Will Rock.

Later in 1954, Cisco Houston hosted a radio show, which led to some suspicion of blacklisting. It was because of his left-wing’s views. In 1944, Houston performed with the Almanac Singers, a left-wing folk group.

With Woody Guthrie and Sonny Terry, Houston took part in recording sessions at the studio of Moses Asch. In 1940, Houston was also a member of the National Maritime Union and worked in the Merchant Marine.

After the US joined WWII, Woody Guthrie joined Houston as a Merchant Marine along with Jim Longhi. This period was documented in a memoir titled Woody, Cisco & Me.
